This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Blogs, and supports the standard of using a variety of digital tools and resources to create and revise digital artifacts. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Ask students:

  • What types of blogs do you enjoy reading?
  • If you were to create a blog, what would you write about?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

  • Read the description on the Blogs topic page.
  • Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
  • Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Way Back When” or “Careers” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Assign Blogs Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about blogs while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Produce a commercial announcing a new blog you’re creating. Answer these questions in your commercial: Who is your blog for? How will you use media, such as audio and images?
  • Make-a-Map: Create a concept map identifying and explaining different reasons people write blogs.
  • Creative Coding: Code a newscast announcing the start of a new blog.
