This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Story Conflict, and supports the standard of analyzing how different elements of a story interact, like the influence of characters on the plot. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Prompt students to think of their favorite story. Then ask: 

  • What problem did the main character face?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Assign the Story Conflict Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about story conflict while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Create a trailer for a book you’ve read. In your trailer, describe the conflict, and answer this question: How does the conflict drive the story?
  • Make-a-Map: Make a concept map that identifies features and shares examples of each type of story conflict. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a comic that tells a story involving one type of story conflict.
