Text Structures Lesson Plan: Craft and Structure

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Text Structures, and supports the standard of describing the overall structure of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display examples of two nonfiction texts with noticeably different structures, like a recipe and an encyclopedia entry. Ask students:

How are these texts different?
How might the structure of each text help a reader to understand it?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Read the description on the Text Structures topic page.
Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Assign the Text Structures Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about text structures while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

Make-a-Movie: Produce a tutorial about text structure that answers this question: What key words, phrases, or ideas can help you to identify a text’s structure?
Make-a-Map: Make a concept map identifying the structure of a nonfiction text you’ve read. Describe the features of that text structure.
Creative Coding: Code a game challenging players to sort titles and headlines based on the text structure the articles most likely use.
