AAPI Heritage Month Lesson Plan: Individuals’ Contributions and Identities

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic AAPI Heritage Month, and supports the standard of identifying and describing appreciation for the influences of various historical and contemporary cultures. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Ask students:

Why is it important to celebrate contributions of different cultures?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Read the description on the AAPI Heritage Month topic page.
Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Real Life” or “In Depth”. Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Assign AAPI Heritage Month Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about AAPI Heritage Month while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs and/or interests.

Make-a-Movie: Make a mini biopic about the Filipino-American activist Larry Itliong and his pivotal role in the labor movement.
Make-a-Map: Identify important figures named in the movie, or from your own research, and explain their contributions.
Creative Coding: Code a digital museum exhibit featuring artifacts to represent achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
