Long Division Lesson Plan: Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
*Click to open and customize your own copy of the Long Division Lesson Plan.
This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Long Division, and supports the standard of finding whole-number quotients and remainders. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Prompt students to think of different strategies they use to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problems. Ask students:
- What kinds of strategies do you use the most often? Why?
- When might you need to use a division strategy?
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Read the description on the Long Division topic page.
- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Assign Long Division Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about long division while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a tutorial explaining how to use long division to evenly divide 3,241 beads among 3 necklaces. Identify the quotient and any remainder.
- Make-a-Map: Create a concept map sequencing the steps to solve for the quotient and remainder of 154 divided by 12 with long division.
- Creative Coding: Code a math problem involving division. Challenge a classmate to use long division to solve.
