This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic, Maya Lin, and addresses the standard of interpreting the meaning of artistic work. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Display a picture of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Ask: “What do you notice? What do you wonder?

Read aloud the description below the Movie player.
Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Students take the Maya Lin Quiz, applying essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about Maya Lin while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

Make-a-Movie: Create a movie that explains the meaning behind the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Make-a-Map: Make a concept map identifying Lin’s influences, and how she interpreted them in her design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Creative Coding: Code a museum with artifacts that represent Lin’s experiences and achievements.
Primary Source Activity: Examine Lin’s design submission, and compare it to the photos of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to answer the questions.
