This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Volume, and supports the standard of finding the volume of a right rectangular prism. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display an image of a suitcase, like this one:

• How might you determine how much the suitcase could hold?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Assign Volume Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about volume while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

• Make-a-Movie: Produce a tutorial explaining how to find the volume of a rectangular suitcase.
• Make-a-Map: Create a concept map sequencing the steps to find the volume of a rectangular toy chest.
• Creative Coding: Code a comic where one character explains to another how to calculate the volume of a rectangular fish tank.
