Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic, Sun Protection. Its content and activities are intended to educate students on the dangers of the Sun, and the importance of protecting themselves from its harmful rays.

Ask students to discuss how they would prepare to spend a day under the hot Sun. Prompt them to consider what they would do before leaving their home and while they are out.

  • Read aloud the description below the Movie player.
  • Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
  • Have students select one of the Related Readings, except for the Comic. Then have them meet in small groups to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY

Students synthesize their ideas and express them through one or more of the following creative projects. They can work individually or collaborate.

  • Make-a-Movie: Make a commercial promoting a brand of sunscreen with a high SPF. Make sure to explain the importance of wearing sunscreen and why the SPF matters.
  • Make-a-Map:  Identify the benefits of broad spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Creative Coding:  Code a meme of a tip about Sun protection.

  • Reflect: After sharing creative projects with each other, students reflect on what they’ve learned about the dangers of the Sun and Sun protection. Prompt them by asking questions such as:
    • Why is it important to protect ourselves from the Sun?
    • In what ways, and how, does the sun damage our skin?
    • What do you plan to do differently next time you spend a day in the Sun?
  • Assess: Wrap up the lesson with a Sun Protection Challenge.
