Sun Protection Lesson Plan: Health and Safety

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic, Sun Protection. Its content and activities are intended to educate students on the dangers of the Sun, and the importance of protecting themselves from its harmful rays. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Ask students to discuss how they would prepare to spend a day under the hot Sun. Prompt them to consider what they would do before leaving their home and while they are out.

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Read aloud the description on the Sun Protection topic page.
Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Q+A,” “In Depth,” or “Trivia.” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Assign Sun Protection Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about sun protection while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

Make-a-Movie: Make a commercial promoting a brand of sunscreen with a high SPF. In your commercial, answer these questions: Why is it important to wear sunscreen? Why does the SPF matter?
Make-a-Map: Identify the benefits of broad spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.
Creative Coding: Code a meme of a tip about Sun protection.
