This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Statistics, and supports the standard of using data from a random sample to draw inferences about a population. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Ask students:
- Can you think of a real-world example of a statistic?
- How do statistics affect your decision-making when buying products?
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Read the description on the Statistics topic page.
- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
- Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Sickness and Health” or “Careers”. Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Assign Statistics Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about statistics while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a commercial using statistics to sell your product.
- Make-a-Map: Make a concept map identifying and explaining the steps to carrying out a statistical study.
- Creative Coding: Code a math problem that uses statistics.
- Primary Source Activity: Examine a baseball statistics report, then cite evidence to answer the accompanying questions.
