1.1.1 The Verb to Be (Affirmative) Lesson Plan
Grade Levels: 3-5, K-3
In BrainPOP ELL’s first movie, Hi, I’m Ben (L1U1L1), Ben introduces students to his friends using subject pronouns, the verb be and its contractions. In this lesson plan, adaptable for grades K-8, ELL/ESL students use images of the four main characters in BrainPOP ELL to practice the present tense affirmative of the verb to be.
Students will:
- Describe pictures using the verb to be in simple sentences.
- Draw pictures to match the verb forms is and are.
- Create mini dialogues based on the movie Hi, I’m Ben (L1U1L1).

Lesson Procedure:
- Who Am I? Attach an image of one of the BrainPOP ELL characters to a student’s back. Using the verb to be, the class gives hints about the character, and the student guesses who he or she is. For example: You are a boy. Moby is your friend. Nikki and Ed are your friends, too.
- Is or Are? To practice the difference between the singular and plural form of to be, say either is or are, or show flashcards with the words written on them as you say them aloud. On blank paper, each student must draw a picture to match the verb. For example, if you show and say the verb is, students can draw a boy, a girl, an animal, or a thing.
- Mini Dialogue. Using the movie Hi, I’m Ben (L1U1L1), ask pairs of students to create mini dialogues of four lines. After practicing their dialogues, students present to the class. To differentiate, and for an added challenge, encourage students to write longer dialogues.
