Volume of Cylinders Lesson Plan: Geometry

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Volume of Cylinders, and supports the standard of solving real-world mathematical problems involving area, volume, and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Display a cylindrical trash can, or an image of one like this:
Ask students:
- How can we determine the volume of trash this can hold?
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Read the description on the Volume of Cylinders topic page.
- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
- Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “In Practice” or “Language.” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Assign Volume of Cylinders Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about finding the volume of cylinders while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a commercial for a cylindrical water bottle, demonstrating how to calculate the volume of water it can hold.
- Make-a-Map: Create a concept map sequencing the steps to determine the volume of soda in a can.
- Creative Coding: Code a math problem about finding the volume of a cylinder. Challenge a classmate to solve the problem.
