Remainders Lesson Plan: Numbers in Base Ten

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Remainders. It supports the standard of finding whole-number quotients and remainders using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Prompt students to think of real-life situations involving division, like breaking up a class into equal groups for a school project, or sharing a pizza evenly. Ask:

• What might happen in each real-life scenario if there were  a remainder?
• Why do you need to treat remainders differently depending on the context?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

• Read the description on the Remainders topic page.
• Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
  

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Assign Remainders Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about remainders while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

• Make-a-Movie: Produce a cooking show where you have baking sheets that hold eight cookies each. Explain how many baking sheets are required  to bake 45 cookies. 
• Make-a-Map: Create a concept map comparing and contrasting scenarios in which  a remainder is dropped, rounded up, or made into a fraction. Identify one example of each situation. 
• Creative Coding: Code a sorting game challenging players to determine whether a remainder in different scenarios should be dropped, rounded up, or made into a fraction.
