Everglades Lesson Plan: Humans and the Environment

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Everglades, and addresses the standard of identifying ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Display this image, or a similar one:
Ask students: What problem do you see? What actions can people take to solve it?
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Read aloud the description on the Everglades topic page.
- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
- Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Personalities,”or “Did You Know?” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.
Assign Everglades Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about the Everglades while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a public service announcement about the importance of the Everglades environment, and actions people can take to preserve it.
- Make-a-Map: Make a concept map identifying and describing the relationship between humans and the Everglades.
- Creative Coding: Code a meme representing the importance of preserving the Everglades.
