Classroom Activities: Time Signature and Note Values
These classroom activities are designed to complement the Time Signature and Note Values topic on BrainPOP Jr.
Parts of a Whole
As a math connection, have students practice dividing things into quarters and halves. You may want them to cut up a piece of paper or divide a group of four counters. Have students make the connection between quarter, half, and whole notes. You can also give students four sticky notes that each have a quarter note drawn on them. Then have them “trade up” for half notes or whole notes.
One, Two, Three, Four
Listen to or sing a song that is in four-four, such as “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” or “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” Have students clap or count out loud to the beat. Then listen to a song that is in three-four together. How does the song sound different?
