Classroom Activities: Line Graphs

These classroom activities are designed to complement the Line Graphs topic on BrainPOP Jr.

What’s the Temperature?

Have individual students or pairs of students track the temperature each day for a week, month, or even longer. Be sure that students always measure the temperature around the same time each day to get a more accurate measurement. You may want to use the Temperature movie for review. Then have students create a line graph displaying their data. Study the graph together and interpret the data. Ask questions about the temperature and have students use the graph to answer. Encourage students to make inferences such as warming or cooling trends and seasonal patterns.

Line Graphs in the Media

Have students bring in a line graph from a newspaper, magazine, or website. Divide students into small groups and invite them to analyze one person’s graph. What data is shown on the graph? Have students discuss the trends and patterns they see. Then have group members create questions for one another and use the graph to answer them. Groups can swap line graphs with each other and repeat the activity.
