Library Organization Lesson Plan: Information Literacy

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Library Organization, and supports the skill of organizing information systematically. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Ask students:
- What are some resources you can find at a library?
- How can you find the book or resource you need at a library?
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Read the description on the Library Organization topic page.
- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Assign the Library Organization Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about library organization while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a public service announcement encouraging people in your community to use the local library. As part of the PSA, describe how people can find a book about a specific topic at your library.
- Make-a-Map: Create a concept map identifying pros and cons of using the Dewey Decimal classification system to organize library books.
- Creative Coding: Code a museum exhibit showcasing examples of books within specific nonfiction classification categories.
