This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Growth Mindset, and supports students in understanding how mindset can impact learning. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Prompt students to think of a time they were faced with a challenging task. Ask:
- What was the challenge? How did you respond to it?
- How might you respond differently if you faced the same challenge?
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Read the description on the Growth Mindset topic page.
- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
- Assign Related Reading.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Assign the Growth Mindset Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about growth mindsets while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a movie where a character struggles to learn a new skill and uses a growth mindset to overcome the challenge.
- Make-a-Map: Create a concept map identifying strategies to practice using a growth mindset.
- Creative Coding: Code a digital museum exhibit featuring symbols to represent your personal and academic growth.
