Grade Levels: K-3

These family and homeschool activities are designed to complement the Slow Land Changes topic on BrainPOP Jr.

Beachfront

If possible, take your child to a beach or lake. Walk around the area together and look at how the land has eroded around the water. How is the shore different from the area around it? Look at rocks together from different parts of the area. Why might rocks in the water be smooth? If you find any sea glass, make sure it is safe to handle and then have your child notice how the erosion has changed its appearance and texture. Discuss with your child.

Plant a Tree

Explain to your child that while erosion is a natural process, human activity can increase erosion and impact land negatively. Soil is an important natural resource and erosion can wash away fertile topsoil. Together, think of ideas to slow down erosion in areas where humans have impacted the environment. One way is to plant trees. Roots can hold soil in place and prevent it from eroding. Plant a tree together to talk about different plant parts and how plants can help the soil and environment.
