Family and Homeschool Activities: Science Tools
These family and homeschool activities are designed to complement the Science Tools topic on BrainPOP Jr.
Scale Up
Go to the grocery store with your child, and have him or her weigh different fruits and vegetables using the scale. Your child can compare the weights and also predict which fruits and vegetables will be lighter or heavier than others. For example, have your child weigh an apple, and then have him or her find another fruit or vegetable that weighs more than the apple. This is a good opportunity to show that some big fruits and vegetables aren’t necessarily heavier. For example, a bell pepper might be bigger than a potato, but it weighs less.
Cook by the Book
Baking with your child is a great way to spend time together, promote healthy eating habits, and practice measurement skills! Select a recipe with your child and have him or her measure the ingredients using measuring cups and spoons. If the recipe calls for measuring a liquid, such as oil or water, show your child the proper way to read measurements on the tool—by observing where the measurement line aligns with the bottom of the curved surface of the liquid. To challenge your child, as him or her to explain how much of each ingredient you would need if you wanted to double or even triple the recipe.
