Family and Homeschool Activities: Points, Lines, Segments and Rays
These family and homeschool activities are designed to complement the Points, Line, Segments, Rays topic on BrainPOP Jr.
String Theory
Give your child pieces of string or ribbon and challenge him or her to create figures using the string. You might have your child create two parallel lines or two intersecting lines, or create a shape that has two pairs of parallel lines. Then have your child challenge you to create figures. Be sure to “make a mistake” and have your child correct you!
Constellations
Explore constellations with your child! Research different constellations that will be visible in your area. Help your child see that the stars are points in the sky and imagined straight lines connect them to form constellations. Then look for the constellations at night! Your child may want to draw the constellations he or she finds and even create his or her own! As a reading and writing extension, your child can write a story about how the constellation came to be. You may want to explore examples of different Native American folktales to inspire your child.
