Sense and Say

Let your child know that sometimes, when we are feeling worried or distracted, we can miss out on what is happening in the moment. Being aware, or mindful, of our senses can help us to relax, reset, and be present.

Sit down with your child and tell them you want to play a game called “Sense and Say.” Look around and list three things in the room, plus use one word to describe each item. “I see a ball. It is red.” When you are finished, ask your child to notice three items and describe them. Did your child notice anything she hadn’t before?

Continue the game with other senses. Your child can close his eyes and listen for three different sounds, like a clock ticking or dog barking. Is there anything he hadn’t noticed until actively listening? Give your child something to eat and have her close her eyes. Can she describe it to you in three words? Afterward, discuss with your child how we can change an uncomfortable pattern of thought by actively noticing the present moment.

Soak it In

Mindfulness is also all about noticing (and being grateful) when things are good. Next time you and your child doing something fun together, like playing a game or reading a book, make sure you take a moment to mention how much you like this time. For example, if you and your child are watching a movie and eating popcorn, pause the film. Tell your child you are happy because you’re under a comfy blanket with him and you think the movie’s funny, plus you really enjoy spending this time together.
