Family and Homeschool Activities for Teaching Long “O”

These family and homeschool activities are designed to complement the Long O topic page on BrainPOP Jr.

Long O on the Go  

While you’re out and about — or at home — play a game of Long “O” I Spy. Have your child notice things that make the long “o” sound (e.g., phone, window, rainbow, soda, snow) and provide clues for you to guess what it is. Then you spy something with long “o” and have your child guess.   

Long O Story or Poem

Help your child write a story or poem featuring words with the long “o” sound. You can include characters with names that have a long “o” sounds, such as Rosie, Joe, and Lola. If you decide to write a poem, you may want to watch the Rhyming Words movie first. Then, help your child write the poem and have him read it aloud to friends and family members. He can act out the poem or create illustrations to go along with the words. Another idea is to create a rebus poem featuring long “o” words.  For more about rebus poems, you can watch the Poems movie with your child. You can even set the poem to music to create a song!
