Family and Homeschool Activities for Teaching Long E

These family and homeschool activities are designed to complement the BrainPOP Jr. Long E topic page, which includes a movie, quizzes, online games, printable activities, and more.

Long E at Home

Give your child sticky notes and have her label things in your home that feature the long e sound, such as cheese, freezer, etc. Sound the word out together and help your child spell the word. Then, reverse the activity by providing your child with a sticky note already labeled with an item. Challenge her to read the word aloud and then find the item in your home. You may want to use words such as peas, teapot, sheets, and jeans.

Long E Story or Poem

Help your child write a story or poem featuring words with the long e sound. You can include characters with names that have a long e sounds, such as Abby, Francine, and Rina. If you decide to write a poem, you may want to watch the Rhyming Words movie first. Then, help your child write the poem and have your child read it aloud to friends and family members. He can act out the poem or create illustrations to go along with the words. Another idea is to create a rebus poem featuring long e words.  For more about rebus poems, you can watch the Poems movie with your child.  You can even set the poem to music to create a song!
