Family and Homeschool Activities for Teaching about Using Adjectives to Compare

These family and homeschool activities are designed to complement the Using Adjectives to Compare topic page on BrainPOP Jr.

Shopping Scavenger Hunt

At the grocery store, prompt your child to compare items using adjectives. For example, they may point to a melon and say That is the largest melon or sniff the cheeses and say The white cheese is smellier that the yellow one.  Encourage them to also compare prices (e.g., The green apples are more expensive than the red ones.) For younger children, or those who need more scaffolding, you can begin by providing prompts, such as Which melon is the largest? and Which cheese is smellier?  As they catch on, the prompts may no longer be necessary.

Family Fun

Invite your child to compare the people in your family. Provide adjectives such as tall, short, funny, old, serious, young, silly, etc. Have them use the adjective to either compare two family members (e.g., Mom is taller than Dad.) or compare more than two (e.g, I’m the silliest in the family.).
