Grade Levels: K-3

These family and homeschool activities are designed to complement the Dividing with Remainders topic on BrainPOP Jr.

Split a Snack
Prepare a healthy snack for you and your child, such as apple slices. Cut the apple into an odd number of slices. Then have your child split the snack with you. Can the snack be shared equally? How many slices are left over? Have your child write a number sentence. Then repeat the activity with other snacks, such as a banana or a handful of raisins or other dried fruit.

Check It and See
Create number stories together that involve dividing with and without remainders. For example, you may want to pose the following problem: “Annie and Moby split a pizza that has 5 slices. How many slices does each person get? How many are left over?” Have your child write the division sentence and solve. Then you can check his or her work. Next, have your child make up a division story problem for you to solve. Be sure to “make a mistake” and have your child correct your work.
