These classroom activities are designed to complement the Dr. Seuss topic on BrainPOP Jr.
Rhyme Time
Select a book by Dr. Seuss, such as Hop on Pop. Have pairs or small groups work together to create a book in the same style. They can follow the same rhyme scheme, patterns, and sentence structure. You may wish to go through a few examples. Then have students create their books and illustrate them. Encourage them to make up their own words to finish the rhyme or come up with their own imaginary creatures to feature in their illustrations.
Pen Name
Remind your students that a pen name is a fake name used by an author in place of his or her real name. Have each student come up with a pen name–remind them to keep it a secret! Then have students create a poster by writing a rhyme and making an illustration. Post their work around the classroom. Who wrote what? Encourage children to make educated guesses, but allow them to keep their identities a secret.
