This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Subject and Predicate, and supports the standard of producing complete sentences. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Display the following sentence fragment:
Went to the park.
Ask students: What is this sentence missing? Prompt them to correct it.
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Read aloud the description on the Subject and Predicate topic page.
- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
- Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Arts and Entertainment” or “In Depth.” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Assign Subject and Predicate Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about subjects and predicates while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a BrainPOP-style movie that identifies the simple subject and predicate in a sentence, and explains the difference between them.
- Make-a-Map: Make a concept map identifying the subjects and predicates of sentences from a favorite book.
- Creative Coding: Code a sorting game where players determine whether phrases are subjects or predicates.
