New on BrainPOP: Henry Hudson Movie
Posted by SM Bruner on
He came… he saw… he named things after himself. Join Tim and Moby as they follow the career of Henry Hudson, the English explorer who spent years searching for the Northwest Passage.
Your students will learn about how the European desire for spices and silk drove the Age of Exploration, a search for alternative trading routes to the Silk Road. They’ll see how Hudson relied on funding from private sources like the Dutch East India Company, as well as monarchs like King James I of England.
Finally, they’ll learn of Hudson’s tragic fate as he faced a mutiny in the New World. Hudson never found a passage through the Arctic, but he became the first person to navigate what is now the Hudson River in New York and Hudson Bay in Canada. Play this movie and your students can set sail on an epic journey of discovery!
We encourage you to have students explore essential questions related to Hudson’s life. Use our Henry Hudson Lesson Plan: Were his explorations successful? resources to help. Our Activity Pages will also be useful as students conduct their own research and examine primary source documents from Hudson’s crew.
Students can then use the Make-A-Map tool to create a digital concept map with images and video clips from the movie to illustrate their take on the life of Henry Hudson.
