Why is Labeling a Diagram an Important Skill?

Objective: Students apply their understanding of a concept by identifying parts of a diagram.

Diagrams support visual learners by showing how something works and the relation between parts. Labeling a diagram requires applying knowledge of a concept. It is an effective form of self assessment, enabling, students to check their own understanding.  Labeling a diagram serves as useful feedback to a teacher, too, as it provides information about what students understand and what they still need to learn.  a drawing intended to explain how something works; a drawing showing the relation between the parts

Diagrams range in complexity from very simple to deeply intricate, and so labeling diagrams is an activity that is appropriate at all grade levels and in many subject areas. For example, at the early grades, students may be tasked with labeling the parts of a plant, while at upper grades they are challenged to label elements of an Impressionist painting.

Related BrainPOP Features

BrainPOP offers several features for practicing diagram labeling skills:

  • Match Challenge: This Challenge task sometimes requires students to match words with a picture.
  • Sortify: The goal of this game is to categorize information about a topic. If there is a Sortify game on the same topic as the diagram, students can play this game to engage with the content.
  • Make-a-Map: With this concept mapping tool students create their own concept maps, which requires labeling to show connections between information, much like diagrams show how parts are related.
