Classroom Activities: Verbs

These classroom activities are designed to complement the Verbs topic on BrainPOP Jr.

Sportscast
Discuss how sportscasters or newscasters narrate what happens in a game or event. You may want to watch a few news clips or parts of games together and listen to the narration. Point out how the announcers use action words to describe what happens. Then have pairs of students find clips of sports games on the Internet. Have them narrate what happens in the clip as if they were sportscasters or newscasters! Allow pairs enough time to write out or practice their narration. Then screen their clip without the sound and have students narrate. Invite listeners to write down all the verbs they hear.

Mad Lib Story

Have students work in small groups to create their own Mad Libs. They can copy a paragraph or short story from a book, or even copy a news story. Then have each group remove all the verbs from their text. The groups can then exchange their Mad Libs and take turns naming verbs to replace in the text. Have students read their new stories out loud!
