This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP news episode Pride Month: Interview with Ose Arheghan. Its content and activities are intended to instill in students the intrinsic worth of all individuals and the value of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive society. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Ask students to describe a time when they saw or heard of someone being bullied. It can be something they witnessed firsthand or that they know about from a book, the news, a movie, etc. Then ask: How did seeing or hearing about the situation make you feel? What did you do and/or what do you wish you’d done?
Follow up by asking the class to brainstorm ways people can stand up to discrimination, or use their voice to make a change.
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

- Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
- Have students read one of the two Related Reading articles. Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Students take the Pride Month: Interview with Ose Arheghan Lesson Plan Quiz, applying essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about Pride Month while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.
- Make-a-Movie: Produce a public service announcement about an issue that’s important to you. In your PSA, answer this question: How can people use their voices to create change?
- Make-a-Map: Create a concept map that uses words, images, and clips from the movie to identify ways to stand up to discrimination and / or advocate for equality and inclusiveness.
- Creative Coding: Code a museum exhibit in honor of Ose or another person who advocates for equality and inclusiveness.
