This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Plot, and supports the standard of analyzing how ideas and characters develop over the course of a story. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of  projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Prompt students to think of their favorite book or movie. Ask: Did a character change by the end of the story? How? 

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Assign the Plot Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about plot while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Create a trailer for a movie based on a book you’ve read. In your trailer, answer this question: How can you summarize the plot of the book?
  • Make-a-Map: Make a concept map  identifying the key elements of the plot of your favorite story. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a meme that shares something about the plot of your favorite story.
