This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Place Value, and supports the standard of reading and writing multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display the number 754. Ask students:

  • What are different ways to represent this number?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Assign Place Value Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about place value while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Produce a commercial that uses place value to compare the prices of two laptops that cost $1,099 and $1,109.
  • Make-a-Map: Create a concept map identifying how to express 2,345,000 in expanded form and word form.
  • Creative Coding: Code a sorting game challenging players to determine whether a given number is greater than 1,542 or less than 1,542. Challenge a classmate to play.
