This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic, Maya Lin, and addresses the standard of interpreting the meaning of artistic work. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of  projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display a picture of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Ask: “What do you notice? What do you wonder? 

Step 2: BUILD BACKGROUND

  • Read aloud the description below the Movie player.
  • Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding. 

Step 3: ENGAGE
Students express what they learned about Maya Lin while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Create a movie that explains the meaning behind the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (Essential Literacy Skill: Summarize key details)
  • Make-a-Map: Make a concept map identifying Lin’s influences, and how she interpreted them in her design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (Essential Literacy Skill: Determine central ideas)
  • Creative Coding: Code a museum with artifacts that represent Lin’s experiences and achievements. (Essential Literacy Skill: Make logical inferences from specific details)
  • Primary Source Activity: Examine Lin’s design submission, and compare it to the photos of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to answer the questions. (Essential Literacy Skill: Evaluate content presented in diverse media)

Step 4: APPLY & ASSESS 

Apply: Students complete the Maya Lin Worksheet, applying essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Assess: Wrap up the lesson with the Maya Lin Quiz
