This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Logic Gates, and supports the standard of describing ways to store data. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of creative projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display an image of a logic gate and a truth table, like this one:

Ask students: What do you think is happening?

Step 2: BUILD BACKGROUND

• Read aloud the description below the Movie player.
• Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
• Have students read one of the following Related Reading articles: “Famous Faces” or “Quirky Stuff.”Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY
Students synthesize their ideas and express them through one or more of the following creative projects. They can work individually or collaborate.

• Make-a-Movie: Produce a commercial for a home security system that explains how logic gates protect different areas.
• Make-a-Map: Make a concept map that identifies and uses examples to describe how different logic gates function.
• Creative Coding: Code a sorting game challenging players to determine which logic gate would create a specific output from given inputs.

Step 4: REFLECT & ASSESS

Reflect: After sharing creative projects with each other, students reflect on what they’ve learned about logic gates.  Prompt them by asking questions such as:

• How is a circuit board similar to a brain?
• How might logic gates work in technology that you use?

Assess: Wrap up the lesson with the Logic Gates Challenge

Step 5:  Extend Learning
