Listening and Speaking Lesson Plan: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas

This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP Jr. topic Listening and Speaking, and supports the standard of recounting an experience or story with appropriate details, and speaking audibly in coherent sentences. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.
Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Prompt students to reflect on their listening skills. Ask:
- When talking with a friend, how can you show each other you are listening?
- Why is this important?
Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE
- Play the Listening and Speaking movie.
- Click the pause button each time a question appears in Annie’s Notebook and discuss it as a class. Then play to see how Annie answers it.
TIP: The pause button turns red to remind you to pause.
Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS
Students take the Easy Quiz or Hard Quiz, demonstrating what they learned about the topic while applying essential literacy skills.
Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND
Students express what they learned about listening and speaking while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student or grade-level needs.
- Activity: Make a telephone with a classmate and practice being good listeners and speakers.
- Talk About It: Explain how listening and speaking skills are important for jobs.
- Write About It: Moby says soccer is the best sport. Write about whether you agree or disagree, then read your answer out loud to a friend.
