Geometric Angles Lesson Plan: What’s the Measure on that Angle?

Grade Levels: 3-5

In this lesson plan, which is adaptable for grades 3 through 5, students use BrainPOP resources to use and apply vocabulary associated with geometric angles. Students will identify examples of different types of angles and measure them with a protractor.

Lesson Plan Common Core State Standards Alignments

Students will:

  1. Use and apply vocabulary associated with angles
  2. Identify examples of different types of angles
  3. Measure angles with a protractor

Materials:

  • Internet and BrainPOP access
  • Digital cameras
  • Checklist of different types of angles

Vocabulary:

angle, acute angle, right angle, obtuse angle, complimentary angle, supplementary angle, protractor, circle

Preparation:

Create a checklist of the different types of angles students will be exploring in this lesson. Prepare copies of the Graphic Organizer and Worksheet.

You may want to invite parent volunteers to assist students in taking photographs and to lend their digital cameras for the activity.

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Show students the BrainPOP movie on Angles.
  2. Give individual students or small groups of students digital cameras to use. Then have them search throughout the school for examples of different types of angles. Alternatively, you can send one group of students out a time with a camera while the others stay in the classroom and explore the Related Reading features or complete the Graphic Organizer and Worksheet.
  3. Allow students to create posters, books, or digital presentations with the pictures.
  4. Give students protractors to measure their angles.
  5. Follow up with the BrainPOP Quiz on angles.
