Meet an Author
Many local libraries have readings by local and touring authors. Some cities also have special programs in parks and community centers that showcase children’s book writers and illustrators. Find a reading in your area in advance and have your child read books by the author and learn more about the author’s history and work. Help your child prepare any questions he or she might want to ask the author. Then go to the reading together!
Based on a True Story
Cynthia Rylant bases many of her stories on childhood experiences. Brainstorm important family events with your child, such as a special birthday, a big family trip, or getting a new sibling or pet. Together with your child, write a story based on the experience. Remind your child that the story does not have to stick to the facts; many fictional stories are based on real events.
