This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Caffeine, and supports the standard of comprehending concepts related to health promotion. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display an image of a cup of coffee or a can of soda, like these:

Ask students:

  • What do you know about drinks with caffeine, like coffee and soda?
  • Why might many adults drink something caffeinated when they wake up in the morning?
  • What might be some benefits and drawbacks of consuming caffeine?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

  • Read the description on the Caffeine topic page.
  • Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding. 
  • Have students read one of the following Related Reading articles: “Eating and Drinking” or “Flora and Fauna.” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Students take the Caffeine Quiz, applying essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about caffeine while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Produce a public service announcement describing the effects of caffeine. Explain how to consume it responsibly.
  • Make-a-Map: Create a concept map identifying benefits and drawbacks of consuming caffeine. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a museum exhibit about the role of caffeine in many cultures.
