This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP News topic At-Home Fitness, and supports the standard of understanding of the importance of exercise in staying healthy. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of creative projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Ask students:

  • What is your favorite way to exercise?
  • What are some challenges you may experience exercising at home? 

Step 2: BUILD BACKGROUND

Step 3: APPLY 

Students express their understanding through one or more of the following creative projects, which also address essential literacy skills. They can work individually or collaborate.  

  • Make-a-Movie: Create your own exercise game, and produce a tutorial explaining how to play. (Essential Literacy Skill: Integrate content presented in media)
  • Make-a-Map: Make a concept map adapting the Deck of Cards Workout to include your favorite exercises and fitness needs. (Essential Literacy Skill: Use domain specific words and phrases)
  • Creative Coding: Code a flag representing the importance of maintaining an exercise routine. (Essential Literacy Skill: Determine central ideas)

Step 4: REFLECT & ASSESS 

Reflect: Students reflect on what they’ve learned about At-Home Fitness. Prompt them by asking questions such as: 

  • How can you be creative with your fitness routine? 
  • What advice might you give someone to help them build their own at-home exercise routine? 

Assess: Wrap up the lesson with the At-Home Fitness Quiz.
