1.4.2 Agent Nouns (-er Endings) Lesson Plan

Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, K-3

In the BrainPOP ELL movie We Don’t Need One (L1U4L2), Moby wants to join Ben’s band, but they don’t need any of the instruments he plays. In this lesson plan, adaptable for grades K-8, students transform verbs into agent nouns, and research the multiple meanings of a vocabulary word.

Lesson Plan Common Core State Standards Alignments

Students will:

  1. Transform verbs to nouns.
  2. Make a list of verbs and associated agent nouns.
  3. Research and illustrate multiple meanings and related words.

Materials:

Vocabulary:

A rock, to rock, rocker teacher, worker, player, singer, drummer, writer; do, don’t, does, doesn’t, always, never, often

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Agent Nouns. Introduce the concept of agent nouns. Show the picture of Musicians and Their Instruments. Ask the class what each character does. For example: Ben is the guitar player. Nikki is the singer. Ed is the bass player. Moby is the drummer. Write each of these nouns on the board and elicit what they have in common (the –er ending). Explain that when we add er to the end of many verbs, they become the person or thing that does the action of that verb. Ask partners to work together to create a list of verbs and agent nouns that go with them, such as write-writer, read-reader, teach-teacher, run-runner.
    Using their lists of agent nouns, ask students to write an affirmative and negative present simple sentence about each of them - something that the people don't do or don't like. For example: Drummers play the drums. Drummers usually don't sing.
