3.5.3 Third Conditional Lesson Plan
In the BrainPOP ELL movie Ancient Egypt (L3U5L3), Ben and Moby try to imagine what life was like at the time of pyramids, pharaohs, and mummies as they explore an ancient Egypt museum exhibit. In this lesson plan, adaptable for grades 3-8, students use the third conditional in oral and written activities.
Students will:
- Look for specific information in the movie.
- Discuss imaginary past conditions using the third conditional.
- Apply the third conditional to new situations.
- Complete sentences from the movie using the third conditional.

For Activity 3, Hear It, Write it, create a handout and make copies for the Hear It, Say It exercise below.- If we _________________ stepped inside a pyramid thousands of years ago, it ______________ looked just like this.
- If I ___________________________the stone did that, I _____________________ on it myself.
- If I _________________________ you would be so scared, I __________________________you with me to the museum.
- A civilization is a way of ______________of a group of ________________ at a time in ________________.
- ____________________________ are scientists who study ancient civilizations.
Lesson Procedure:
- If You Had Lived in Ancient Egypt... As students watch the movie Ancient Egypt (L3U5L3), pause at the appropriate moments to ask questions, such as the following. Instruct students to answer using the third conditional.
What would you have seen if you had lived in ancient Egypt?
If you had been an Egyptian pharaoh, what would your life have been like?
What would Ben have wanted to bring with him to the next life if he had been the pharaoh?
What would have Moby brought with him to the next life if he had been the pharaoh?
What would you have brought with you into the next life if you had been the pharaoh? - If We Had Lived Then. In the movie Ancient Egypt (L3U5L3), Ben and Moby wonder what life would have been like if they had lived during that time. Instruct students to work with a partner and write at least one paragraph about imaginary life in Ancient Egypt, using the third conditional. They may use, but are not limited to, vocabulary and ideas from the movie. Alternatively, or in addition to the above suggestion, ask students to choose and write about life during another time in history.
- Hear It, Write It. Use the Hear It, Say It feature for a sentence completion exercise. Distribute the activity (see Preparation). Have students complete the sentences BEFORE listening to the audio clips. After they fill them in, have students listen to compare their answers. To differentiate, provide a word bank.
- I Regret It! Read aloud the first scenario from the suggested scenarios below. Give students 1 minute to write a response that begins with If I had… or If I hadn’t…. After a minute is up, have volunteers read their statements as the rest of the class checks their responses. Continue with the rest of the scenarios, or ask the students to think of others.
Suggested scenarios:
You fell asleep in class and failed a test the next day.
You studied hard and got 100% on a test.
You weren’t looking, and slipped on a banana peel.
You overslept and missed your bus.
You entered a contest and won!
You threw the ball so hard, it crashed into the window.
You forgot to take an umbrella and now you’re soaking wet.
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES
Prepare a listening activity, such as a cloze/gap-fill, with a song that uses the third conditional. Since songs are always a fun way to reinforce language, we have included a list below, even though they only contain the result clause of a conditional sentence. You can use them as a springboard to discuss the structure further, or as an exercise to complete missing clauses.
