Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, K-3

In the BrainPOP ELL movie, Fun and Games (L3U2L5), Moby is unhappy because it’s raining. Ben convinces him that there are endless ways to have fun indoors, like playing charades. In this lesson plan, adaptable for grades K-8, students review conjunctions and affixes as they sort vocabulary words, identify prefixes and suffixes, and write a dialogue.

Lesson Plan Common Core State Standards Alignments

Students will:

  1. Write and perform a dialogue.
  2. Identify words with affixes.
  3. Classify vocabulary words according to parts of speech, and add affixes to create new parts of speech.

Vocabulary:

Shape, circle, square, triangle
Parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction
Affix, prefix, suffix, base word, root word

Preparation:

For Activity 2, Parts of Speech Sort, write the Flash Words, without parts of speech, on the board or chart paper for students to reference.

For Activity 4, Find the Shapes, make enough copies of the Find the Shapes Image for all students.

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Rainy Day Fun. The movie Fun and Games (L3U2L5) is about how Ben and Moby pass the time indoors on a rainy day. Before watching, have partners activate prior knowledge by discussing and listing their own ideas for rainy day activities. After watching the movie, have them compare their ideas with Ben’s.
To review conjunctions, have partners turn their list of ideas into a short, written dialogue, that includes conjunctions. Refer them to this lesson's Know More for a review of conjunctions. To differentiate, write dialogue prompts on the board, for example:
A: Even though it's raining, there are lots of fun things we can do inside.
    B: Like what?
    A: We could __________and______________.
    B: We could either________or _______________.
A: After we finish ________, we can _____________.
B: Rather than _____________, we can_________________.
  2. Parts of Speech Sort. In the movie, Ben and Moby play a game using parts of speech. Review the parts of speech using a Closed Word Sort with the new vocabulary words. Have pairs sort the words by parts of speech. Challenge students to add more words, and parts of speech, by adding prefixes and suffixes to the existing words. For an animated review, show the last segment of the Grammar section in the movie.
  3. Affix Bingo. Play a Bingo game to review the affixes learned in this unit. Instruct students to make game boards by drawing a grid of five rows and five columns to create 25 squares. Squares should be big enough to write words in the boxes. With the students’ help, make a list on the board of the affixes—both prefixes and suffixes--they learned. Students must write a different word using an affix in each box, putting them in any order they like. Once students have filled in their game boards, call out affixes one at a time. When a student completes five in a row and calls “BINGO,” the student must verify that he won by giving a sentence using each word in the row. Examples include:
    Affix: Un
    Word: unlucky
    Unlucky people never win anything.

    Affix: Ful
Word: Helpful Example sentence: Helpful people are teachers.

The affixes covered in this unit are:
Prefixes: un-, dis-, im-, in-, re-, pre-, post-, sub-, trans-, bi-, tri-, multi-, over-, under-, out-,
Suffixes: -ion, -ment, -ness, -or, -er, -ist, -ful, -less, -able, -ive, -ous
  4. Find the Shapes. To review the three shapes taught in this movie, distribute a copy of the Find the Shapes Image Prompt to every student. Have them identify everything in the picture that is in the shape of a circle, square, or triangle. They can keep a list of the objects they find, sorted according to the shapes. You could also do the activity as a class contest to see who finds the most objects. To differentiate, some students can circle or point to the objects, while other students can give an oral or written description. Alternatively, project the image and have students identify the objects on the board.

Extension Activities

Ask volunteers to explain how to play the game that Ben and Moby played in the movie. Provide sequence signal words and/or sentence frames, if needed.

Have students create a game similar to the one Ben and Moby play in the movie. They can use a poster board and index cards, or any available resources and materials they need to be creative! Play the games in class.

Play the game Charades with the class. Pass out index cards to small groups of students. The teams think of words or phrases to be acted out, and write them on the cards.
