Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, K-3

In the BrainPOP ELL movie, Camouflage (L3U2L2), Moby is nowhere to be found. It turns out, he was just blending into Ben’s bedroom ! As Ben and Moby learn about camouflage in both predators and prey, students also learn about negative prefixes. In this lesson plan, adaptable for grades K-8, students identify and practice using negative prefixes.

Lesson Plan Common Core State Standards Alignments

Students will:

  1. Identify negative prefixes in the movie.
  2. Illustrate words with negative prefixes.
  3. Combine word parts to make new words with negative prefixes.

Materials:

Preparation:

Make copies of the Word Map Graphic Organizer.

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Add A Word. As the class watches the Grammar section of the movie Camouflage (L3U2L2), pause after the segment for each prefix (un-, im-, in-, dis-), and brainstorm other words the students might know. Note: The Remember segment at the end of the Grammar movie offers a good visual review of negative prefixes.
  2. Make A Word Map. Have students choose one of the negative prefixes (un-, im-, in-, dis-), and place it in the center of a four-square page, such as the Word Map Graphic Organizer. In the four squares, they should illustrate words with that prefix. To differentiate, you can suggest the words to illustrate, such as Fighter as unfed, undressed, unleashed, unhappy. When they have finished, the class can guess the words that they illustrated, and suggest titles and/or captions for the pages.
  3. Make A Negative Prefix Table. Before watching the movie Camouflage (L3U2L2), have students make a four-column table in their notebooks with the prefixes taught in this lesson (un-, im-, in-, dis-). Then while watching the movie, students fill in words with those prefixes, as they hear them. To differentiate, turn closed-captioning on or off. After the movie, ask students to think of more words to add to the columns.
  4. Make A Match. Seat the students in small groups and distribute index cards. Using the Negative Prefix Tables they made, have students divide the words among themselves, taking one column (prefix) each. Instruct students to write all the base words and prefixes in their column on separate cards, making a prefix card for each base word. They will have multiple cards with the same prefix. Next, have students put away their Negative Prefix Tables, mix the group's cards together, and shuffle them. Now they put the cards together to make all the matches they can, and lay them out on the desk. The group that completes their matches first, wins. To differentiate and/or extend the activity, ask groups to think of, and share, a brief scenario using any of the words.
