Coding in K-8 Classrooms: Empowering Creativity and Content Creation
10:30 am-12:30 am • Pre-conference Workshop / Convention Center, Room: 209
Join Dr. Kari Stubbs (BrainPOP) and Dr. Julie Evans (Project Tomorrow) for this pre-conference workshop. Most educators and policymakers agree that today’s students need fluency in coding, computer programming, or computational thinking to be well-prepared for future success. This expectation has fueled a gold rush mentality to create new coding opportunities for students, both in school and out of school. While these efforts are notable for creating awareness of coding, many are insufficient for addressing equity considerations or supporting creativity skill development. In this session, we will discuss a new approach that focuses on integrating coding throughout the curriculum, across all subject areas, and leverages tools to help students become content creators, not just coders. Participants will learn about research-based essential conditions for optimizing coding as a future-ready learning experience. Remember to bring your own device.
