This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Friendship, and supports students in establishing and maintaining healthy and supportive relationships. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display the word “Friend” on the board. Prompt students to share words, feelings, and phrases that they associate with the word, recording their ideas on the board. 

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Assign Friendship Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about friendship while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Produce a movie about you and your friend where you explain how you keep your friendship strong. 
  • Make-a-Map: Create a concept map identifying different ways to address a friendship that is growing apart. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a comic about two friends successfully resolving a disagreement.
