Digital Citizenship with CBE of the Month Kate Lissy

Posted by cemignano on

We’d like to introduce you to April’s Certified BrainPOP Educator of the Month, Kate Lissy! Kate became a CBE in fall 2017 and teaches K-4 technology, robotics, coding and STEM. She also works with teachers to integrate technology into their lessons. With more than 25 years of teaching experience, Kate has taught K, 1 and 2 before becoming a full time Technology Facilitator.

What inspired you to go into education?
When I was in second grade, my teacher gave me an old basel reader, a gradebook, and I was hooked! My parents built a little mini classroom in our basement and I played school for hours. I taught swim lessons, worked as a camp counselor and finally became a teacher. I can’t think of anything else I would want to do.

What are you most passionate about when it comes to education, technology, and your approaches to teaching?
I believe that learning is a lifelong process. I love to see students follow their own passion and use creativity, technology and problem solving to learn. I think learning is at its best when students work together to solve real problems. My work with coding, STEM and robotics allows me to be creative and guide students to find issues that they want to find solutions to.

How does BrainPOP support your educational passions and inspirations?
BrainPOP is one of my go-to resources for information – my kids cheer when Moby appears! The kids love to watch the movies over and over again and beg to take the quizzes! The topics are so varied that students can always find something that interests them.

How has BrainPOP supported digital citizenship in your school?
I love the digital citizenship lessons. I use the games to reinforce the topic. This year I want to use Make-a-Movie to have them create PSAs for great digital etiquette. The challenges are great for formative and summative assessment.

What’s on your BrainPOP wish list?
I would love for the kids to be able to work in collaborative pairs or groups.
