Celebrating Pride

Posted by jglassman on

June is Pride Month, and this year marks the 50-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots—a series of confrontations between police and gay rights activists outside New York City’s Stonewall Inn that catalyzed the LGBTQ rights movement in the United States.

BrainPOP celebrates the progress of the LGBTQ community while recognizing that there is still work to be done to achieve full equality.

At BrainPOP, we are committed to helping kids understand their world. By providing content that addresses and encourages pride in identity and diversity, we aim to foster mutual understanding and respect, while also creating a safe space for children experiencing bullying and harassment. Our high-quality educational resources are well known and appreciated. Inclusive curricula correlate to a positive school experience all around.

We invite you to explore our topic featuring Harvey Milk—a champion of gay rights and one of the nation’s first openly gay elected officials. It traces the roots of the LGBTQ rights movement, leading up to contemporary issues your students hear about in the news.

Recognizing and respecting the sensitivity of this topic, we encourage you to preview the movie before sharing it with your class. We understand the profound significance of speaking to kids, at eye level, about topics that are sometimes challenging to discuss, and supporting the adults in their lives in doing so, too.
