Ok, what is all of the buzz about new standards adoption? Well, if you haven’t heard, 44 states across our nation have officially adopted the Common Core State Standards. If you are in one of these 44 states, get ready because the standards are set to roll out during the 2012-2013 school year. The National Governors Association and State Education Chiefs launched the standards last year in an effort to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
As educators, many of us aren’t quite sure how to react to this news. Whether you are excited, nervous, overjoyed or unsure, the implementation phase is in full effect and it is time to start thinking about how we are going to teach these new standards to our students. Go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief; our friends at BrainPOP have come to the rescue! As thousands of educators unpack these new standards and begin looking for resources to enhance their curriculum, BrainPOP is ready to make this journey easier for us. BrainPOP has already aligned all of their resources to the Common Core State Standards. BrainPOP’s State Standards tool is an awesome search feature that will aid you in your quest for standards-based videos, quizzes, lesson ideas, activities, learning games, and more.
